ECC? I heard it before! What is ECC exactly?
What a good question! ECC stands for "Error Checking and Correction", a method to ensure data integrity, which has a wide variety of uses.
In this case, this program uses that algorithm for protect the data integrity of files and even whole directories.
ICE ECC can help you to generate ECC files, that can help to test the integrity of the original file, and even repair it. To do the job, ICE ICC uses Reed-Solomon codes (like the ones used on Compact Discs and other error-prone media).
There are several parameters that can be set when creating ECC files, related with block allocation, header redundancy, redundancy and size of recovery blocks, etc.
For years, CD-ROMs were the preferred method for performing backups of data. And now, after reading some related pages, I realized that "CD-R/DVD-R disk can hold its data intact for only a few years"...wow! Could this program be a must have to keep a backup safe?
Well, with this program, you can work with two purposes: generate an ECC file with a redundancy less than 100% (just an error-correction file, you need the source one) and do the same with a redundancy greater than 100% (this is the 'archive mode': you don't need the source file to get it back).
Interesting, don't you think so?
Advantages
  • The ECC files are well compressed.
Disadvantages
  • It's a little buggy, sometimes crashes.
